East Silver Spring Affordable Housing Development Breaks Ground
Stakeholders held a groundbreaking this week for a new affordable housing development in East Silver Spring. All 98 apartments in the Sligo Apartments building at 715 Sligo Ave. are reserved for individuals with incomes between 30% and 80% of the area’s median income, currently $91,970 for a household of four. Additionally, nine units are designated for people with disabilities, three will meet Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards (UFAS) qualifications, and one unit will be reserved for a resident who is UFAS-qualified for impaired vision or hearing.
MCDOT to Hold Public Meeting on Proposed Carroll Ave. Bike Lanes
The county’s Department of Transportation will hold an in-person public meeting next week to present plans for the Carroll Ave. Separated Bike Lanes project. The proposed design includes separated bike lanes on each side of Carroll Ave. from Merrimac Drive to University Blvd., as well as a two-way cycle track on the east side of the street from University Blvd. to Piney Branch Rd. (MD 320) in the Takoma/Langley Crossroads area.
Loyalty Bookstores Near Fundraising Goal, Begins New Chapter at Analog Market
Loyalty Bookstores, which has locations in downtown Silver Spring and Petworth, is nearing its fundraising goal on Indiegogo, with the campaign ending on Friday. Launched earlier this month to address immediate needs and strategize for the future of the stores, the campaign has garnered support from 579 backers, contributing over $53,000 toward its $60,000 goal. Supporters can receive unique Loyalty merchandise, lifetime memberships for discounted shopping, and exclusive author experiences.
County Council to Consider Proposed Changes to New Housing Parking Requirements
The County Council will consider a proposed law to remove certain parking requirements for new housing projects. “Montgomery County is experiencing a housing shortage, and we must adopt meaningful reforms to address this crisis,” Glass said. “According to the Montgomery County Department of Transportation, it costs between $70,000 to $100,000 to build each underground parking space that is required for new development in our urban areas. Reducing parking near transit is a commonsense approach that will make housing more affordable, help us reach our housing goals, and move us toward a more sustainable, green future.”
J. Hollinger’s Launches Real Food for Kids Giving Tuesday Campaign
J. Hollinger’s in downtown Silver Spring has begun a Giving Tuesday fundraising effort for the McLean, Va.-based nonprofit Real Food for Kids. The Real Food for Kids: Chefs Feeding Families program, involving local chefs, restaurants, and nearby farms, is dedicated to providing nourishing meals and fresh, locally-grown produce boxes to children and families experiencing food and nutrition insecurity in the area.

Suspects Sought in Armed Robbery at Chuck E. Cheese
Takoma Park Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the individuals involved in an armed robbery at Chuck E. Cheese on Saturday evening. At around 6:46 p.m. on Saturday, Takoma Park Police responded to the Chuck E. Cheese entertainment center on University Blvd. after an armed robbery. Police spokesperson Cathy Plevy said the victim had just left the restaurant and was heading to their car when two suspects, one with a black handgun, approached them. The victim went back into the restaurant for safety before rejoining their family. When they headed back to their car, the suspects threatened them with the gun and demanded their belongings. The victim gave in to the demands to protect themselves and their family.

Louis Armstrong’s secret daughter will shed light on the personal life of the music and cultural icon in the acclaimed PBS film “Little Satchmo.”. The film, which won the Southeast Emmy Award for Outstanding Historical Documentary, will be featured at Docs In Progress’ December Silver Screen Series at 7 p.m. on December 12th. Following the screening, there will be a live in-person Q&A with the film’s star, Louis Armstrong’s daughter, Sharon Preston-Folta.
Police: Drone Assisted in Arrest of Repeat Shoplifter
Montgomery County Police say that a recently deployed drone helped apprehend a repeat shoplifter in Silver Spring. MCPD’s Drone as First Responder Program introduced an unmanned aircraft, with the call sign Raven, to provide critical support to the department and better serve the residents of the county, according to a press release.
Lemon Slice Café Now Open Daily
Lemon Slice Café is now open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. 7 days a week, as announced by owner Beth Yohannes on Instagram yesterday:. Lemon Slice Café opened its doors in September 2019 at 8737 Colesville Rd. in downtown Silver Spring. With over 20 years of experience in the catering industry, Yohannes took over the space previously occupied by Dip n Rolls, which closed in July of the same year. The café became popular for its unique blend of Ethiopian flavors in salads and sandwiches, particularly the Kitfo Sandwich (video below) and the Awaze Tibs Panini.

Police: Grandparent Scam Once Again on the Rise
Police in Takoma Park are once again warning residents about the commonly known “Grandparent Scam.”. The Grandparent Scam occurs when a fraudster pretends to be a family member or friend of the victim and claims to be in trouble or in need of help. Sometimes, the scammer will say that the loved one is unable to speak, so the scammer speaks on their behalf. Scammers make various emergency claims during these calls, such as a loved one being in jail, having been in an accident, being kidnapped, or being physically injured. To assist the family member or friend, the fraudster typically insists that the victim must send money through wire transfer or other means, such as pre-paid cards, online transactions, or gift card purchases.
Morning My Day Café to Soft Open Saturday
Morning My Day will have a soft opening this Saturday, according to a post on the café’s Instagram account. Holy Cross Health Partners has opened a new primary care practice at The Leggett senior apartment community in downtown Silver Spring. The Leggett, a 267-unit, 16-story building that opened earlier this year at 1315 Apple Ave., provides affordable and market-rate housing for residents aged 62 and older. The apartment building is part of Elizabeth Square, a neighborhood in downtown Silver Spring that features a mix of residential, commercial, and recreational spaces for people of all ages.
Giant Food to Add Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
Giant Food will soon add free electric vehicle charging stations at the supermarket chain’s downtown Silver Spring location. In 2020, Ahold Deglaize USA-owned Giant entered a public-private partnership with the Maryland Energy Administration and Volta, a San Francisco-based EV charging station provider, aiming to set up more than 200 charging stations at their supermarket locations in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and the District.

Police arrested a man for allegedly starting a fire in an apartment at the Arrive Silver Spring building and then barricading himself inside. WJLA reports that officials stated off-duty police officers were in the vicinity and witnessed a person breaking a window on the third floor of the Arrive Silver Spring apartments on Georgia Ave. in downtown Silver Spring at approximately 7:20 a.m. on Monday.
