Demolition Underway at Unisphere Annex Site
Demolition has begun at the future home of United Therapeutics‘ Unisphere Annex building in downtown Silver Spring. The property, previously home to a dual-branded Hampton Inn/Homewood Suites hotel at 8728 Colesville Rd., was purchased by UT in October of 2021 with plans to build additional office space. The hotel closed soon after the purchase.
Police: 12-Year-Old Responsible for Bomb Threats
A 12-year-old has been identified as the person who emailed bomb threats to three Silver Spring schools. In a statement issued Wednesday, Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones said the 12-year-old who sent seven bomb threats to Maryland schools was aware that a state law would prevent authorities from charging him. Under Maryland’s Juvenile Justice Reform Act, enacted last year, anyone under the age of 13 cannot be charged with a crime unless it’s a “crime of violence.”

Police: 31-Year-Old Man Missing Since October 20
Montgomery County Police are seeking the public’s assistance in finding a 31-year-old man reported missing after leaving a White Oak hotel on Friday. NBC 4 reports that Rashawn Williams, who is nonverbal and has Down syndrome, left a Residence Inn in the 12000 block of Plum Orchard Drive in White Oak around 6:20 p.m. Friday. “Synesthesia” by Baltimore artist Becky Borlan has been chosen as the winner of the Gene Lynch Urban Park art contest, Montgomery Parks officials announced. A public vote and a months-long selection process led to the selection of “Synesthesia” among four finalists. It will be permanently installed in Gene Lynch Urban Park in the summer of 2024.
Silver Spring Ice Skating Rink Open for Winter Season
The Silver Spring Ice Skating Rink at Veterans Plaza in downtown Silver Spring is now open for the 2023-24 winter season, according to tweets by operations manager Eric Rasch. According to the rink’s website, all skaters must pre-register and pay online. Sessions last up to two hours, not including ice maintenance time, and can be pre-purchased up to two weeks in advance. Ticket prices for adults are $11, for children and seniors $10, and for skate rentals $6.
Suspect Sought in Sexual Assault on Sligo Creek Trail
Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying the suspect in a sexual assault that took place Sunday afternoon on the Sligo Creek Trail. Maryland-National Capital Park Police said in a press release that a woman was assaulted at approximately 3:55 p.m. Sunday while walking on Sligo Creek Parkway near Three Oaks Drive. A male unknown grabbed the victim’s buttocks while she was walking along the trail. A confrontation ensued between the victim and the suspect, who fled along Three Oaks Drive.

Dunkin’ to Open at Central Apartments
Dunkin‘ plans to open a new store at the Central Apartments at 8455 Fenton St. in downtown Silver Spring. The location will be operated by Silver Spring-based franchisee Luis Group Management, which operates Dunkin’, Baskin-Robbins, and Jersey Mike’s Subs restaurants in Baltimore and D.C. Luis Group opened a Dunkin’ location in Four Corners last year.
Newell Street Community Meeting Held This Week
The county’s Department of Transportation held a community meeting this week to discuss closing Newell Street to traffic. In 2020, Newell Street was closed to vehicle traffic between Kennett Street and East-West Highway, near Acorn Park and the planned park at the former National Tire & Battery site. The street was reopened to traffic after Labor Day in 2022.

Serial Hardware Store Thief Sentenced to Four Years in Prison
42-year-old Terry Tompkins of Temple Hills was sentenced this week for a string of hardware store robberies. A 15-year prison sentence was imposed on Tompkins with all but four years suspended, and he was sentenced to five years probation after his release. One count of robbery and three counts of theft stemming from four incidents at hardware stores in June and July 2022 led Tompkins to plead guilty on December 19th, 2022.
The Eleanor’s Bowling Lanes Sold at Auction for $15,500
The Eleanor Silver Spring’s bowling lanes have sold at auction with a winning bid of $15,500. The AMF Highway 66 Mini Bowling System includes five lanes, five monitors, five tablets, three ball returns, five pinsetters, lighting, balls, a bunch of manuals, spare new bowling balls, spare parts, and much more. The overall dimensions of the lanes are 302.5 inches wide and 349 feet long. The equipment behind the lanes extends approximately 36 inches, and the tablets in front of the lanes extend approximately 16 inches. The winning bidder, who was not disclosed, is responsible for removing the lanes from The Eleanor.
