New Bill Would Require Fire Extinguishers in All High-Rise Buildings Without Sprinklers
A new bill introduced in the Maryland House of Delegates would require fire extinguishers in high-rise buildings without sprinkler systems installed. The bill, known as the Melanie Diaz Sprinklers Save Lives Act, was introduced by Delegates Lorig Charkoudian, Marvin Holmes, David Moon, Emily Shetty, Jared Solomon, and Jheanelle Wilkins after the fire at the Arrive Silver Spring apartment complex claimed the life of Melanie Diaz and displaced hundreds of residents.
Capitol Heights Men Arrested in Connection With Bonifant St. Homicide
Montgomery County Police say that two men from Capitol Heights have been arrested in connection with a homicide that occurred on March 5 in downtown Silver Spring. Kajohn McCombs and Ahmahd McCombs, both 22 years old, are in custody following the murder of Deandre Keith Ellis, according to an MCPD press release.
Takoma Park Teens Arrested for Stolen Auto, Other Offenses
Police in Takoma Park say that two teens are facing several charges in connection with the theft of a vehicle reported in Rockville. Police spokesperson Cathy Plevy said that at approximately 9:51 a.m. on Tuesday, officers located a stolen vehicle with two juveniles inside in the 6700 block of Gude Ave. The driver began to move away when officers approached, driving off the road and onto a tree stump. After assessing that the juveniles were not injured, the officers determined that the vehicle they were traveling in was reported stolen by Rockville police.
County Council Opens Application Process for Two Planning Board Positions
The County Council has opened the application process for two full, four-year terms on the Planning Board, including for the board chair position, officials announced. The positions re open to anyone who is registered as a member of any political party or are unaffiliated with any party. Applicants should indicate in a cover letter which position they are applying for. Annual compensation for board members is currently $30,000, and the full-time chair currently earns $228,000.
Hyattsville Teen Arrested for Stolen Auto, Other Offenses
Police in Takoma Park say a Hyattsville teen faces several charges in connection with an auto theft that occurred early Sunday morning. Officers responded just before 1 a.m. Sunday to the 7100 block of Holly Ave. for a report of a stolen vehicle, according to police spokesperson Cathy Plevy. The officers observed a vehicle driving away at a high rate of speed while the stolen vehicle was being driven behind it. The officers attempted to stop both vehicles without success. The vehicles split up at Maple Ave. and Erie Ave., with the vehicle in front turning onto Erie Ave. towards Flower Ave. The officers continued to monitor the stolen vehicle.
