Takoma Park Police Launch First-Ever Diaper Drive to Support Local Families
Takoma Park Police have launched their first diaper drive this month to help local families in need. With the theme “Changing Lives One Diaper at a Time,” the primary goal of the drive is to “alleviate the financial burden on our residents, thus enabling them to use their resources towards other essential needs,” according to police spokesperson Cathy Plevy. “By providing access to diapers through community support, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who require assistance in our community.”
July 1 Brings New Minimum Wage Rates for Montgomery County Employers
Montgomery County’s minimum wage rates are scheduled to increase next month. Effective July 1, the minimum wage for large employers with 51 or more employees will increase by 45 cents, bringing the hourly rate to $17.15. For mid-sized employers with 11-50 employees, the rate will increase by 50 cents to $15.50 per hour.
Suspect Wanted in Downtown Silver Spring AT&T Store Burglary
Montgomery County Police are asking for help identifying the suspect involved in a burglary at the AT&T Store in Downtown Silver Spring last April. According to a press release, the suspect forced entry into the AT&T Store in the 8500 block of Georgia Ave. at 3:21 a.m. on April 8, stole merchandise, and left the scene.
Commuter Alert: Fare Increases for Metro Bus and Rail on July 1
Metro fares are set to increase with the transit agency’s new budget, which takes effect on July 1. Bus and base rail fares will increase by 12.5 percent from $2 to $2.25, while the maximum rail fare will rise from $6 to $6.75. Late-night and weekend fares will also increase, shifting from a flat $2 to a variable rate between $2.25 and $2.50 based on distance traveled.
Fatal Hit-and-Run in Takoma Park: Suspect Vehicle Identified by Police
Montgomery County Police have identified the suspect vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run with a pedestrian early Monday in Takoma Park. In a press release issued Friday, MCPD described the vehicle as a black Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Extended Cab pickup truck, possibly from 1999 to 2006, with likely minor damage to its left side from the collision.

Station Square Office Complex in Downtown Silver Spring Set for Foreclosure Auction
The Station Square office complex in downtown Silver Spring will be auctioned off this month due to foreclosure. Station Square comprises three adjacent towers at 1010 and 1100 Wayne Ave. and 8484 Georgia Ave., just a block east of the Silver Spring Metro and Purple Line stations. According to the Washington Business Journal, the buildings will be sold at a public auction on June 18, following the borrower’s default on the financing linked to the properties.
Woodmoor UPS Store at 10125 Colesville Rd. Permanently Closed
The UPS Store at the Woodmoor Shopping Center in Four Corners has permanently closed its doors. According to a sign on the door, the store located next to Bento Express at 10125 Colesville Rd. has closed as of Tuesday, June 4th. Customers who used the store’s Mailbox and Access Point services can now pick up their mail and packages at The UPS Store at 8705B Colesville Rd. in downtown Silver Spring.
