McGinty’s Owner to Open Whelan’s Beer & Wine
The owners of McGinty’s Public House and Astro Lab Brewing will open Whelan’s Beer & Wine this week at 9812 Falls Rd. in Potomac Village. Whelan’s is owned by Greg Whelan, who opened McGinty’s with Brian Dolphin at Ellsworth Place in 2006, and his wife Emma, owner of Astro Lab Brewing, which closed in May.
Peri Peri Original Now Open, Kallisto Steakhouse Coming Soon
Peri Peri Original is now open in the former home of Pollo Mex at Colesville Center, with Kallisto Steakhouse soon to follow. Watford, U.K.-based Peri-Peri Original opened its first U.S. restaurant in Alexandria, Va., in 2018. The Nando’s competitor is currently expanding rapidly in the United States, with over a dozen locations already open in Maryland and Virginia.
Overnight Road Construction Scheduled for Colesville Road
A section of Colesville Road near downtown Silver Spring will undergo overnight construction later this month. MT Laney Company, Inc. of Eldersburg has requested a temporary noise waiver from the county’s Department of Environmental Protection for the milling and paving of Colesville Road between Spring St. and Woodside Parkway.

Police in Takoma Park are seeking help identifying the suspect in the July 2022 murder of a mobile mechanic at Advance Auto Parts. A cash reward of up to $10,000 is being offered to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest and/or indictment of those responsible for the murder.
Construction Underway at New Cielo Rojo Location
Construction is currently underway for Cielo Rojo’s new location in Takoma Park. As reported last year, Cielo Rojo will move to a larger location to accommodate an expansion of the restaurant, according to Nevin Martell of Washington City Paper. Martell wrote last year that the restaurant would relocate to the former Healey Surgeons location at 7211 Carroll Ave., adjacent to the Takoma Park fire station.
All Set Restaurant & Bar Hosting Oyster Eating Contest
All Set Restaurant & Bar in downtown Silver Spring will host its inaugural oyster eating contest in honor of National Oyster Day. The contest will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 5. Chef/owner Ed Reavis will kick off the event with an oyster shucking demonstration.

Java Nation to Open Downtown Spring Location in September
Java Nation is set to open in downtown Silver Spring in September, according to an email received by the Source. We reported last year that Java Nation would open its fourth coffee shop/café at the Station Square office complex at 1010 Wayne Ave. in a space vacated by a deli. According to the company’s website, the Silver Spring location will comprise two distinct concepts: a quick-service Java Express and a full-service Java Restobar.

Ribbon Cuttings to Be Held for Motorkat, People’s Book
Takoma Park newcomers Motorkat and People’s Book will have ribbon-cutting ceremonies this Saturday, according to an announcement by Main Street Takoma. Bump ‘n Grind Marks First Anniversary of Analog Market
Coffee shop and roaster Bump ‘n Grind is marking the first anniversary of its Analog Market at 923 Gist Ave. in downtown Silver Spring. After hosting a series of pop-up markets, owner David Fogel acquired the space last year, with plans to transform the building into what he called a “one-of-a-kind third space”, including an outdoor garden, indoor coffee house/restaurant, vinyl/piano bar, and back patio.
Suspect Sought in Burglary of NOAA News & Valet Shop
Montgomery County Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect in the May burglary of the NOAA News & Valet shop in downtown Silver Spring. Police were called to the shop in the 1300 block of East-West Highway at approximately 8 a.m. on May 30 for the report of a burglary that had occurred earlier. In a preliminary investigation conducted by detectives, it was determined that between Friday, May 26, and Tuesday, May 30, the suspect broke a lower window at the store with a rock, entered the building, and stole an undisclosed amount of merchandise, according to an MCPD press release.
Lotus Café to Permanently Close: Report
Lotus Café at 8077 Georgia Ave. in downtown Silver Spring will close its doors at the end of July, according to The MoCo Show. According to the report, Lotus Café has been serving the Silver Spring community for nearly 15 years. The restaurant, which is ranked #45 of 203 Silver Spring restaurants on Tripadvisor, has received over 400 Yelp reviews and over 350 reviews on Google, earning 4.4 and 4.4 stars, respectively. Eater readers named Lotus Café’s pho a soup to try in 2012.
Palace Halal Food Now Open in Downtown Silver Spring
Palace Halal Food is now open in downtown Silver Spring. In June, we reported that Palace Halal Food would take over the former La Bamba Restaurant located at 8241 Georgia Ave. The restaurant, situated between Juste Restaurant & Lounge and Underground Pizza Co., serves fast-casual “halal cart” food popularized by The Halal Guys in New York City.
J. Hollinger’s Adding All-You-Can-Eat Brunch Buffet
J. Hollinger’s Waterman’s Chophouse will be adding an all-you-can-eat brunch buffet to its offerings beginning Sunday, July 23. As a result of the success of their Father’s Day brunch, which was received enthusiastically according to the restaurant, J.Hollinger’s has added the buffet to its regular menu. There are a number of house-made items on the menu, including slow-roasted ribeye with fresh herbs and garlic, honey-fried chicken, house-cured gravlax, crab-stuffed deviled eggs, brioche French toast with local berries, frittatas with local eggs, cherry tomatoes, basil, candy onions, and fontina, among others.
