Genre-Clashing Styling, Barrel Jeans, Asics Trending for Holiday and Resort

There are two sides to Resort and Holiday 2025 fashion trends.

In a recent webinar, Kendall Becker, Trendalytics fashion director, shared the retail intelligence platform’s data-driven forecast for the transitional seasons. Building on Fall/Winter 2024-2025 runway trends and current Google search and social media trends, the seasons reflect the market’s interest in both versatile investment pieces and maximalist color.

A muted color palette of “near neutrals” answers consumers’ call for wearable and practical fashion. A continuation of the quiet luxury trend, Becker said successful pieces balance function with an emotional element like comfort.

Barrel jeans, the women’s wide-leg or horseshoe fit that tapers at the ankle, is one of the trend’s basic items.

“We’ve been seeing [barrel jeans] on a runway for a minute, but this is really performing well within the masses right now,” Becker said. “Average weekly searches are up over 1,000 percent and social buys also being up nearly 14,00 percent in the last 90 days. That engagement is impressive—that’s a huge number.”

Interest in organic-shaped gold jewelry and ballet flats is also rising, with the versatile shoe garnering 308 million views on TikTok . Becker noted how the addition of hardware gives the simple silhouette some edge. “What to be thinking about from these learning is how the items feel very functional and stable, but they have just a little bit of something extra to them,” she said.

The genre-clashing styling seen on the fall runway is already influencing the Resort 2025 themes. Think Adidas track pants with a cool blazer, Becker said. Or a sequin skirt with an athleisure hoodie for a daytime look. Market adoption for sequin skirts is up 90 percent, while market adoption for gray hoodies is up 12 percent.

Consumers’ enduring love for athleisure underpins the theme. Interest in Asics sneakers is growing as the market looks for the next Adidas Samba . Luxury labels and denim brands are also giving drawstring pants a makeover with elevated fabrics, Becker said.

“Because this is a styling [theme], storytelling is incredibly important,” she said. “If you’re working in marketing or styling campaigns, something to be thinking about here is how to help her pair [these pieces] together and make it feel new.”

After a lot of blatantly sexy moments in the last few seasons, holiday trends are transitioning to a more elegant look, Becker said. However, the look is still fun with a focus on updated nostalgic silhouettes like drop waist skirts and dresses. Market adoption for drop waist dresses is up 184 percent. A-line miniskirts are another staple that Becker said will be important for holiday and Spring/Summer 2025.

The key, she added, is to let the silhouette stand out by keeping the fabric minimalistic. “Things should look very high quality even if it’s sitting at a lower price point,” she said.

Another trend for holiday reimagines “the feminine ethos” by mixing lace, lingerie details, ruffles and ruching. Becker added that holiday is a time when that consumer who might not normally dress within this category is open to trying a bow or lace.

“If your customer isn’t so overly feminine, if that’s not her thing, think about what are some different ways that we can be mimicking this look,” she said. “Maybe it’s a trim or paneling so there’s a peekaboo effect.”

The trend can also skew more gothic. “Explore some of these darker iterations that aren’t so sweet and feminine,” Becker said, adding that a dark bow can be more vampy, cool or mature. “Different ways for different customers.”

Holiday 2025 is proving to be more colorful . Red continues to be a key hue, but Becker said consumers are shifting to extremes—either going dark and vampy with burgundy or opting for brighter orange tints. “We still love cherry red at the holidays. I’m still expecting [consumers] to be wearing all those red purchases that they bought last season into Fall 2024, so keep that in mind as you continue to develop [your assortments].

The same for pink, with colors like magenta and light pink replacing the bright Barbie pink that has been trending for years. Becker added that “a lot is happening with bold shades of blue” on the runway, from midnight to cobalt to navy.

“Escape shades of blue” and shades of bold orange and peach are also trending for resort, serving as an alternative to red and pink.

Natural fibers and colors pulled straight from a jungle or sunset are driving resort color trends, Becker said. Despite fashion not being in a big print cycle, she said the colors can be used as ombre, color blocking and contrasting trim.

Shell jewelry and embellishments drive home the tropical vibe. Market adoption for shell necklaces is up 180 percent.

“What’s been interesting is we saw a peak in shell jewelry a couple of years ago, then saw a bit of a decline and now it’s coming back in a big, big way this year,” Becker said, adding designers are taking both a literal approach with pukka shell chokers and a more sartorial approach, reinterpreting shell shapes into metal.
