Italian denim brand Dondup has partnered with Swiss material verification firm Bluesign as part of its global Denim Initiative.

Launched in March 2023, the Denim Initiative includes a global network of brands, manufacturers, mills and materials suppliers including Madewell, Everlane, Reformation , PureDenim, Saitex , Advance Denim and ISKO, and works to implement clean chemistry and sustainable practices in denim production to ensure high standards of safety and environmental responsibility.

Member companies tap into Bluesign’s comprehensive solutions system, which focuses on sustainable chemistry, allowing makers and others in the denim supply chain to employ a holistic approach to drive environmental improvements, enhance worker safety and increase resource efficiency.

Bluesign will work with Dondup for comprehensive on-site assessments, management of input streams and verification of chemical inventories to ensure stringent safety and sustainability standards are upheld at every step of production.

“By partnering with Bluesign, we are advancing our mission to minimize environmental impact and uphold the highest safety and responsibility standards in our supply chain,” said Matteo Anchisi , CEO of Dondup. “This collaboration allows us to produce stylish, environmentally conscious, and socially responsible premium denim.”

Bluesign recently released its 2023 impact report, highlighting its overall impacts on environmental stewardship as well as data from select system partners. According to the report, Bluesign reduced more than 3 billion kilograms (6.6 billion pounds) of carbon emissions over the past four years. And across 226 of the firm’s Tier 2 textile manufacturer partners, around 6.3 billion liters of water were saved between 2019 and 2023 using resource-efficient processes. About 773.6 million kilowatt-hours of energy were saved by those network partners, too.

Bluesign also has a comprehensive database of more than 20,000 approved substances, which it uses as a benchmark for sustainability and safety in analysis of manufacturing processes and supply chains.

Anchisi said Dondup—which has long pushed sustainable products and processes through collaborations with sustainable denim mill Candiani —sees the partnership with Bluesign as not only an opportunity to improve its own practices, but also as a way to encourage others in the industry to follow suit.

“We chose Bluesign as a trusted partner to ensure our production processes meet stringent environmental and social criteria,” he said. “Together, we are setting a new standard for sustainability in the fashion industry, prioritizing transparency and accountability. We are proud to lead the way in sustainable denim and anticipate the positive impact this partnership will have on our products, industry and the world.”
