EAST DUBUQUE, Ill.—The South Beloit boys basketball team had tried to prepare for postseason play by going up against a strong Lena-Winslow squad in its regular season finale.

The result? The SoBos were stomped 55-24. But it turns out that South Beloit had learned a little something from the matchup after all.

The SoBos won their third-straight regional championship by downing the sixth-seeded Panthers 48-44 in the 1A East Dubuque Regional finals.

Ross Robertson, South Beloit’s all-time leading scorer, helped spur the win with his team-high 21 points. Behind the junior was balanced scoring as Desmond Hampton, Coltan Porter and TreyMon Payton-Ruff all contributed eight points.

The third-seeded SoBos (25-7) had advanced to the championship against fifth-seeded Lena-Winslow (23-9) with an exciting 32-32 win over East Dubuque on Wednesday night.

Robertson provided a double-double by pouring on 16 points and snatching 14 rebounds while Hampton hit a layup with under a minute to go that proved to be the game-winner.

South Beloit’s defense got one final stop on the Warriors (20-12) to seal the victory.

The SoBos will face first-seeded Eastland (25-9) in the sectional semifinals at River Ridge High School in Hanover on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
