HEBRON, Ill.—South Beloit baseball head coach Dominic Strangman said before the start of the season that incoming freshman Richard Carlson had the potential to be one of the best SoBos in program history.

On Thursday night, Carlson showed off that star potential he possesses as he went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and threw five hitless innings to help the SoBos earn their first win of the season with a 3-0 shutout over Alden-Hebron.

Andrew Kaehler put South Beloit (1-8) on the board in the second when his single scored Conner Joiner, who pinch ran after Reece Binder singled.

Carlson singled to start the third and stole second before Jonah Martinez singled him home. JT Sanders then made it 3-0 when he hit a one-out single, moved to third on Carlson’s second double and scored on Martinez’s ground out.

Meanwhile, Carlson struck out 13 Green Giants (3-3) while issuing just two walks in the five-inning complete game.

South Beloit trailed 9-2 in the second inning of the second game of the doubleheader when play was suspended due to rain. Carlson had scored Sanders with a double before later stealing home but the SoBos had committed 10 errors as Alden-Hebron took advantage with eight unearned runs.

    • PREP SOFTBALL: SOUTH BELOIT 8, ALDEN-HEBRON 2: Whitney Schnack had quite the Thursday as she went 3-for-4 from the plate with three runs and an RBI while earning the win in the circle with 10 strikeouts as the SoBos beat the rain with a win over the Green Giants.

Schnack allowed just two hits and two runs (one unearned) in five innings. She singled in the first, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on Macey Lineman’s single to center field. Lineman would go on to score on a passed ball.

Taylor Castor had a one-run double in the third, where Shelby Ambrose also drew a bases-loaded walk. South Beloit (5-3) made it 5-0 on an error in the fourth while RBI singles from Schnack and Lineman in the fifth made it 8-1.

Lineman had three hits and three RBI while Castor had two hits. Alden-Hebron (2-3) committed four errors in the loss.
