ST. JOSEPH COUNTY — The St. Joseph County Police Department is investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that killed a South Bend resident over the weekend.

Officers were dispatched to the U.S. 31 Bypass and Indiana 2 interchange around 10 a.m. June 30, following the report of a fatal crash.

According to police, witnesses reported that a red Chevy SUV lost control while traveling westbound on Indiana 2. As the truck approached the bypass interchange, it went into the grass median, struck the concrete supporting wall under the bridge and finally came to a stop in the northwest cloverleaf of the interchange, police said in a press release.

Officers found the body of John D. Ulmer, 72, of South Bend.

Police report that Ulmer was the only person in the truck and no other vehicles were involved. The crash remains under investigation.
