    Health briefs: Make a Memory Bear at Lory's Place

    Activities

    ST. JOSEPH — Lory’s Place, 445 Upton Drive, will host a Memory Bear Activity from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 25. Create your own Memory Bear from a special item of clothing from your loved one. Sewing needles, thread, and sewing pattern will be provided, along with some small embellishments. Participants will be walked through the process of making a simple bear together as a group, and additional help will be available for those who may need assistance. This activity is free, but please register by calling 269-983-2707.

    Classes

    SOUTH BEND — Downtown South Bend Inc. will offer free yoga, Zumba and more every Saturday through Aug. 31. The program is held at the Gridiron, 122 S. Michigan St. The drop-in classes are free and open to all ages and skill levels. This year, participants are asked to bring a small donation for the Food Bank each week or when able. Participants should dress in appropriate clothing and footwear, bring a mat and adequate fluids, and will be required to sign a waiver for the season. Free parking is available on the street and in the Leighton Parking Garage, enter off Jefferson Boulevard. This Saturday’s class includes 8 a.m. Yoga; 9 a.m. Zumba; 10 a.m. Barre.     SOUTH BEND — Alzheimer’s and Dementia Services of Northern Indiana will offer the free class in the Care Partner Academy, “Summer Activities With the Family” from 10 to 11 a.m. July 22. Patty Piechocki, director of the Institute for Excellence in Memory Care, will lead this live/interactive web session. Participants can connect through their computer.     SOUTH BEND — RiverBend Cancer Services Wellness House, 3516 E. Jefferson Blvd., will offer the following “Living Well with Cancer” classes.     MISHAWAKA — Battell Community Center, 904 N. Main St., offers the following fitness classes. Please note that fees and charges are subject to change without prior notice.

    • Cardio Drumming — Combines dance and fitness. All skill levels are welcome. 6:30 p.m. Mondays; 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cost: $5 per class.

    • Middle Eastern Dance — Fitness and fun for all ages. Level 1 (beginners), 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays; Level 2 (intermediate/advanced), 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Wednesdays; Level 3 (approval from Ruby); 6 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays. For cost and information contact Ruby at 574-315-1915.

    NILES — The Niles District Library, 620 E. Main St., is offering a beginner yoga class, every other Monday, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Community Room. The class is for adults age 18 years and older and all levels of experience are welcome. Bring a mat, wear comfortable clothing that allows movement. There is no registration required and admission is free. The instructor is Sam Major from Dancing Feet Yoga. Next class is July 22.

    HealthLinc Community Health Centers will hold Back-to-School Health Fairs at the following locations. This year’s theme, “Powering Communities Through Caring Connections” highlights the role that health centers in providing access to affordable, high-quality, cost-effective health care to the medically vulnerable and underserved in our communities. HealthLinc is offering no-cost, well-child checkups and sports physicals. If possible, insurance will be billed. Attendees will receive a free backpack and school supplies while supplies last. There will be food, giveaways, fun and more. This event is open to all students and families. You do not need to be a HealthLinc patient or attend a specific school district to attend.
