CrowdStrike glitch had minimal effects in South Bend area. Airport, 911 centers adjusted

SOUTH BEND — Local law enforcement and airport flights mostly escaped being caught up in a globally disruptive IT outage, but a couple of nearby counties were feeling some of the effects.

The glitch in the software update of CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity program, caused outages for airports, banks and emergency response centers across the world. CrowdStrike is generally used by businesses and governments that use the Windows operating system.

Mike Daigle, CEO of South Bend International Airport, said that his team first detected the glitch at 4:30 a.m. No flights were landing or departing at that time, so no flights were grounded right away. One flight route was cancelled — both the departure and arrival of the Allegiant flight to Phoenix/Mesa. Some other flights, like an American Airlines flight to Charlotte and a Delta flight to Atlanta, are delayed because of the CrowdStrike glitch.

Emergency response centers were affected too.

Officials at the Elkhart County’s sheriff’s office said that they detected an outage at 12:30 a.m.

Todd Anderson, assistant director of Elkhart County's consolidated 911 center said that though the computerized 911 dispatch center was affected by the glitch, his team was still able to answer 911 calls on the back-up phone system during the outage.

“With computerized dispatch being down, the dispatcher might have had to look at Google Maps to give the caller directions, but they were still receiving emergency calls,” Anderson said.

Anderson said that the County wasn’t receiving non-emergency administrative calls for a while, but all systems, including the computerized 911 dispatch system have been restored as of 10 a.m. this morning.

The CrowdStrike glitch also affected the 911 dispatch center of St. Joseph County, Mich. The St. Joseph County, Ind. dispatch center did not experience the outage.

South Bend Police Department and Mishawaka Police Department said their systems did not experience any outages. Transpo bus services were also unaffected.
