SOUTH BEND — It’s almost time for world-class soccer to grace a temporary grass playing surface at Notre Dame Stadium.
Chelsea FC and Celtic FC, famed powers of the English Premier and Scottish Premier leagues, respectively, will face off in a friendly match Saturday afternoon at the home of Irish football.
Chelsea, six-time champion of the English Premier League, is visiting North America for the third straight summer of exhibition matches. The Blues opened their five-date tour against Wrexham on Wednesday in Santa Clara, Calif., home of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers.
Chelsea, under new manager Enzo Maresca, also has scheduled stops in Atlanta (July 31 against Club America); Columbus, Ohio (Aug. 3 vs. Manchester City); and Charlotte, N.C. (Aug. 6 vs. Real Madrid).

Previewing Chelsea-Celtic soccer friendly at Notre Dame
This is the first U.S. tour since 2010 for Celtic, which opened a three-date swing on July 20 in Washington with a 4-0 exhibition win over DC United of Major League Soccer.
Star midfielder Matt O’Riley, subject of ongoing transfer rumors involving Liverpool of the EPL, scored two first-half goals in the easy victory.
The "Bhoys," coming off their 54 th Scottish League championship, also knocked off reigning EPL champion Manchester City on Tuesday in Chapel Hill, N.C. German winger Nicolas Kuhn keyed the 4-3 win with a pair of goals and an assist.
Announced in March, this will mark the second international soccer exhibition at Notre Dame. In July 2019, Borussia Dortmund of the German Bundesliga handed Liverpool a 3-2 loss on a 90-degree night.
