    Headlines in History 1967: Paint dumped in park pool force workers to drain for cleaning

    What was making news in our area during this week in years past? The History Museum offers these newspaper excerpts to give you an idea.

    July 28, 1909: “Retail druggists and their families enjoyed a picnic at Berrien Springs, Mich., yesterday. Dinner was served on the shore of Lake Chapin. In the afternoon the trolley ride was resumed and St. Joseph and Benton Harbor were visited.” — The South Bend Tribune

    July 29, 1918: “Taking advantage of the circus crowds in the city Saturday, police and members of the Home guards waged a campaign for draft dodgers. Many suspects were taken to the police station who were unable to produce registration cards, but these were later released after they had proved their registration.” — The South Bend Tribune

    July 30, 1928: “A committee composed of prominent men of South Bend, and the officers, directors and members of the St. Joseph Aviation club will assemble Tuesday afternoon at the municipal airport to meet the air mail plane bringing the first issue of Movietone News for exhibition at the Colfax theater, it was announced Monday.” — The South Bend Tribune

    July 31, 1931: “Dorothy Hester, noted woman stunt pilot, of Portland, Ore., accompanied by Rex Rankin, of the Rankin airport, Portland, stopped in the city last night. She landed her ship, a Great Lake plane at the municipal airport. She left at 2 o’clock this afternoon for Cleveland, Ohio, where she is to participate in the national air races.” — The South Bend Tribune

    Aug. 1, 1941: “More than 500 singers from all over northern Indiana will have a part in the chorus of "The Messiah” when it is presented at Winona Lake, Ind., on the night of Aug. 23. Homer Rodeheaver, nationally known song leader, is preparing the huge chorus. Among the soloists will be Doris Doe, contralto, star of the Metropolitan Opera company.” — The South Bend Tribune

    Aug. 2, 1955: “The 29th annual St. Joseph County 4-H Fair opens its four-day run in Playland Park Wednesday with fair officials expecting attendance records to fall with the largest number of exhibit entries in fair history to attract the public.” — The South Bend Tribune

    Aug. 3, 1967: “The Mary Gibbard Park municipal swimming pool was closed for several hours Wednesday while city employees drained it and removed paint from the walls and flooring which vandals poured into the water late Tuesday.” — The South Bend Tribune
