SOUTH BEND – Dan Tobin, the 2022 overall champion, shot an opening one-over 73 Saturday at Elbel Park Golf Club to take a three-shot lead over Mark Harman into Sunday’s final round of the Greater South Bend Senior Men’s Metro Golf Tournament.
Playing in the 50-59 age division and in the lead twosome on the 6,109-yard layout, Tobin started his day with five straight pars before making birdie on the par-5, 494-yard sixth hole. He then bogeyed the par-4 seventh for a frontside even-par 36. Tobin bogeyed the 10 th hole and was able to survive a double-bogey seven at the par-5, 481-yard 15 th hole thanks to birdies on the par-4 14 th and 16 th holes for a one-over 37 back.
James Gates shot an 80 and was second in the flight. Tobin and Gates will tee off the first hole at Erskine Park Sunday morning at 10:52 with Doug Fedore (81).

Harman, playing in the 60-69 division, also had to survive a double bogey – at the sixth hole – during a frontside four-over 40. But he did with a backside 36 that included a birdie at the par-5 11 th and seven straight pars to finish off his 74 which was three strokes better than flight foe George Trey. Harman and Trey tee off Sunday morning at 10:04 with Ted Neal (80).
The 70-over division, playing Elbel at 5,159 yards, is led by 78-year-old Dick Neher, who beat his age with a five-over 77 that included two birdies and an eagle at the par-5 sixth. Neher had a one-stroke lead in the flight over Kevin Swartz, who had three birdies in his round of 78. Neher, Swartz and Jim Van Fleit (81) tee off at 9:24 Sunday morning.
