    Headlines in History 1913: Labor Day work horse parade to be important affair

    What was making news in our area during this week in years past? The History Museum offers these newspaper excerpts to give you an idea.

    Aug. 18, 1909: “South Bend electrical workers have been put on the anxious seat by the greatly increased voltage of electric power used in the city. They say they are not informed of the presence of high tension wires until too late and the common council committee last night was appealed to in the matter.” — The South Bend Tribune

    Aug. 19, 1913: “Final preparations are being made for the annual work horse parade of the Humane society in South Bend the morning of Labor Day. Over 400 entries have been solicited and the cards are coming in rapidly enough to indicate a large turnout.” — The South Bend Tribune

    Aug. 20, 1923: “That South Bend is one of the banner cities of Indiana in the field of industrial employment is shown in a survey issued by the department of labor. Labor is being continuously employed here at high wages, and in some fields there is a labor shortage, the survey states.” — The South Bend Tribune

    Aug. 21, 1939: “JoAnn Eberhart, nine-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George F. Eberhart, jr., 1442 East Jefferson boulevard, won the national championship in the juvenile girls’ division of a baton twirling contest held at the Chicagoland music festival Saturday night in Chicago.” — The South Bend Tribune

    Aug. 22, 1948: “There is nothing in western Europe today quite as valuable as the American dollar in the opinion of Dr. L G. Ericksen, 1322 East Wayne Street North, who with Mrs. Ericksen and their daughter, Joan, returned Saturday from a two-month tour. Dr. Ericksen bases his observation on the favorable exchange he was able to get almost in every country he visited.” — The South Bend Tribune

    Aug. 23, 1950: “Seventeen applications for the position of St. Joseph county airport maintenance superintendent were received Tuesday at a meeting of the board of aviation commissioners in the terminal building.“ — The South Bend Tribune

    Aug. 24, 1969: “St. Joseph County opens its fifth jail in history this week, and the public will get a chance to tour the new facility today, Monday and Tuesday before prisoners move in later in the week. Sheriff Elmer Sokol and the County Board of Commissioners will participate in a brief dedication ceremony at 2 p.m. today at the main entrance to the jail off S. Main St. just south of the Courthouse.” — The South Bend Tribune
