Two hospitalized in South Bend following 'disturbance' where officer fired his gun

SOUTH BEND — The St. Joseph County Police Department is investigating an early-morning incident in which a South Bend Police Department officer fired his gun during what South Bend Police have described in a press release as "reports of a disturbance and a crowd."

Two people are now being treated in the hospital, a male with an apparent gunshot wound and a female with injuries that appear unrelated to gunfire, police said.

On Sunday, Sept. 1, around 4:20 a.m., South Bend Police were dispatched to the area of Washington and Wellington streets on reports of a disturbance and a crowd, the release said.

As police were on-scene, the release said, a South Bend Police Officer reported shots being fired and, in return, fired his department-issued firearm.

No officers were injured, police said.

In accordance with the interlocal agreement between agencies (SBPD, St. Joseph County Police Department and Mishawaka Police Department ), the St. Joseph County Police Department is leading the incident investigation.

Once the St. Joseph County Police Department completes its investigation, the release said, the facts, evidence and statements will be presented to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor ’s office for review of the findings.

The South Bend Police Department will also convene an internal investigation to ensure the officer’s actions followed department policy, procedure and training, South Bend Police said.

Per department policy, the officer involved is on administrative leave as the investigation continues.
