    Headlines in History 1969: Bendix Woods Park Dedication Next Sunday

    What was making news in our area during this week in years past? The History Museum offers these newspaper excerpts to give you an idea.

    Oct. 6, 1909: “The second of a series of three big home-coming parades will be given to-morrow in the automobile floral pageant. Many machines have been entered and a number of very prettily decorated vehicles will be seen.” — The South Bend Tribune

    Oct. 7, 1919: “Plans to provide South Bend with 1,000 new houses as rapidly as they can be built were brought to light this morning by the filing of an application by F. C. Raff, representing the Oliver Chilled Plow company, for permits to begin the immediate construction of 100 dwellings on the Oliver tract southwest of the city.” — The South Bend Tribune

    Oct. 8, 1928: “All lighting of the municipal airport, six miles northeast of the city on Edwardsburg highway, will be completed by Wednesday, Assistant Chief of Police John B. Kuespert, airport superintendent, said this morning. All hazard lights were placed in operation Saturday while the boundary lights will be switched on Wednesday.” — The South Bend Tribune

    Oct. 9, 1934: “Progress toward definite regulation of South Bend establishments selling alcoholic beverages by the city council came Monday night at the weekly meeting of the aldermanic body when a proposed ordinance specifying closing hours and hours when liquor may be drunk in establishments passed first and second readings.” — The South Bend Tribune

    Oct. 10, 1942: “The Pedalers, city recreation department adult bicycling club, will hold its first afternoon bike hike Sunday when the group leaves Howard park at 1 p.m. for a trip to Elkhart, Ind. Floyd V. Merriman, city recreation director, announced that the hike is open to all interested persons.” — The South Bend Tribune

    Oct. 11, 1958: “Notre Dame clashed with ancient Irish rival Army this afternoon before a record crowd of more than 60,000 in a football battle that even the experts had a hard time trying to figure. The largest press delegation in several years at a Notre Dame game had few predictions, generally agreeing with the two rival coaches who decided ‘it will be another great game.’ ” — The South Bend Tribune

    Oct. 12, 1969: “Plans for the first formal dedication of the Bendix Woods County Park at 2 p.m. next Sunday have been announced by Robert J. Fischgrund, president of the St. Joseph County Parks and Recreation Board. The dedication will coincide with the opening of the new entrance to the park off Timothy Rd. a quarter of a mile south of the intersection with Ind. 2.” — The South Bend Tribune
