    Rabid Raccoon Reported on Deans Lane in South Brunswick

    SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ - A rabid raccoon was found near Deans Lane in South Brunswick on Saturday, according to the township. The raccoon was retrieved by animal control and was reported to the New Jersey State Department of Health Laboratory. It was confirmed to have rabies on Wednesday.

    According to a press release, the raccoon had an altercation with a resident’s dog. The condition of the dog is currently unknown at this time.

    The township says this is the first known case of rabies discovered in South Brunswick this year. It is the third rabid animal detected in Middlesex County for this year, according to a press release.

    Residents are reminded to report any wild animals showing signs of unusual behavior and to avoid contact with them. Common signs of rabies are slow movement, excess saliva, and acting aggressive.

    Any bites or altercation with a wild animal should be reported to the South Brunswick Health Department at (732) 329-4000 ext 7237.
