Don't pet the fluffy cows... An 83-year-old woman from South Carolina was hospitalized following her visit to Yellowstone National Park this past weekend. According to the National Park Service, the woman was exploring the park near the Storm Point Trail at Yellowstone Lake, when a bison who was "defending its space," charged the woman, goring her and lifting her "about a foot off the ground."
The woman sustained serious injuries and was taken immediately to Lake Medical Clinic, and then flown by helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. The woman's condition is currently unknown as the incident remains under investigation. Of course, Yellowstone has had its fair share of bison attacks in the past few years, and believe it or not, bison are the leading cause of animal-related injuries at the park. Nearly all encounters are caused people getting too close. The park cautions visitors to stay more than 25 yards (that's 75 feet for all you mathletes) away from all large animals including bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes, and at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves. Bison are generally pretty docile, but like most animals, can become aggressive when they feel threatened. And when you're pushing 2,000 pounds, getting aggressive can be mean serious and life-threatening injuries for those involved. What's more, bison can run pretty damn fast for their size, nearly 3 times faster than most humans. Take notes, people... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8bsoaGPceA
