Kamala Harris secures more than half the delegates to win DNC presidential nomination

In roughly 24 hours, Vice President Kamala Harris secured more than half of the 1,976 pledged delegates needed to win the Democratic presidential nomination after President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign.

At least 1,152 delegates have pledged or announced their support for Harris, according to an Associated Press survey . No other candidate has received any delegates besides Harris since Biden exited the race.

This is in line with most Democratic leaders who have endorsed Harris following Biden's decision to back the vice president. Most of the other leaders who could have challenged Harris for the nomination, such as Govs. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI), J.B. Pritzker (D-IL), and Gavin Newsom (D-CA), have thrown their support in for Harris.

Tennessee became the first state delegation to pledge its 77 delegates to Harris. Other states including North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana, all pledged delegates to the vice president as well.

Before the party convenes for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month, the rules committee will meet Wednesday afternoon to come up with a framework to decide the next Democratic nominee, according to a source familiar.

Biden won 3,896 delegates before he suspended his campaign Sunday in a surprise post on X. Those delegates have now been released to vote for whichever candidate they deem best.

The Harris campaign has seen a fundraising boom since Sunday afternoon, raising nearly $81 million in grassroots donations in 24 hours.

“The historic outpouring of support for Vice President Harris represents exactly the kind of grassroots energy and enthusiasm that wins elections," said Kevin Munoz, Harris's spokesman, in a statement. "Already, we are seeing a broad and diverse coalition come together to support our critical work of talking to the voters that will decide this election."

Harris traveled to Wilmington, Delaware, where the campaign headquarters are located, Monday to say "hello" to staff.

In her first public remarks since Biden dropped out, Harris praised the president for his leadership.

"In one term, he has already surpassed the legacy of most presidents who have served two terms in office," said Harris as she celebrated NCAA championship-winning athletes at the White House.
