SOUTH CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — The first Kroger Marketplace in West Virginia will break ground on April 1, 2025, according to South Charleston Mayor Frank Mullens.

The store will be located in the new Park Place shopping center on MacCorkle Avenue.

Mullens also says a new Menard’s home improvement center will break ground in Park Place on or before that date.

City officials had earlier predicted that Menard’s would break ground this spring, but Mullens says the project remains on track.

“(Menard’s) paid $7 million to buy the property,” Mullens said. “There’s no question they’re coming.”

Park Place is the former location of a fly ash pond, and site preparation has taken several years to accomplish.

“The settlement and compression (of the soil) has gone exactly as planned,” he said.

Meanwhile, a new Starbucks will open in Park Place on Friday. The ubiquitous coffee chain will be the second retailer in Park Place, following a Chick-fil-A restaurant which opened in March 2023.
