What was the Dawes Act?
PINE RIDGE—There are many reasons for the social and economic struggles of all seven Lakota tribes, but the main reasons tribes in South Dakota live under some of the harshest conditions and in the poorest counties in the United States can be traced to three Congressional Acts: the Dawes Act of 1887, the Great Sioux Reservation Act of March 2, 1889, and the Burke Act of 1906. The Dawes Act was also known as the General Allotment Act and the Burke Act is formally known as the General Allotment Act Amendment of 1906, or the Forced Fee Patent Act. These three acts have had a devastating impact on all seven tribes of the Titonwan, but especially the Oglala Sioux Tribe and their home reservation of Pine Ridge.
