    DeLand motorcyclist killed in South Daytona after losing control of bike and hitting a tree

    A 26-year-old DeLand man died after he was "ejected" from his motorcycle and hit a tree, according to a social media post by the South Daytona Police Department.

    The incident happened around 8:15 p.m., near the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue in South Daytona.

    Police believe that the rider, Luke Tyler Smith, "was operating the motorcycle in a careless manner, causing him to lose control," according to the post. "Eventually, he was ejected from the motorcycle and struck a tree."

    Smith was not wearing a helmet.

    Officers and first responders got to the scene and tried life-saving measures on Smith, but he died at the scene.
