Foundation poured for Dollar Tree in east Emporia
It isn’t paving paradise to put up a parking lot, but construction in northeast Emporia is replacing the Family Fun Center with a Dollar Tree. With the foundation recently poured, Emporia city officials confirmed basic plans for a roughly 9,800 square-foot building at 920 East 12th, between Old Rum’s Liquor and Goodcents. A construction timetable is pending.
Pittsburg celebrates 4th of July and 71 years of Kiddieland
PITTSBURG, Kans. — There were plenty of smiles in Pittsburg Thursday to celebrate the 4th of July. The City of Pittsburg hosted a full day of celebrations in Lincoln Park and at Kiddieland. In fact, this year marks the 71st year of Kiddieland’s existence in Pittsburg. The day began with a Firecracker 5K bright and early this morning, a car show through the lunch hour, and radio-controlled airplane demos. There were also pickleball, cornhole, and disc golf tournaments, as well as lots of people enjoying those Kiddieland rides, all in the name of “fun.”
17-year-old sentenced to prison for shooting death of Lawrence teenager
OLATHE, Kan. (KCTV) - The 17-year-old who pleaded guilty to the shooting death of a 15-year-old girl from Lawrence has been sentenced to nearly 11 years in prison. Johnson County, Kansas, District Court records indicate that Davon D. Washington, 17, of Olathe, has been sentenced to nearly 11 years in prison for the shooting death of 15-year-old Brianna Higgins, of Lawrence.

Citizen asks Great Bend council to revisit golf cart ordinance
In a span of six weeks, legalizing golf carts on city streets has been discussed three times at Great Bend City Council meetings. On May 20, the council did not have the minimum of five votes needed to pass a new ordinance. 40th Patriot Parade brings 100+ entries under cool clear skies
Thousands of people lined Main St. in Hutchinson on Thursday morning for the 40th Patriot Parade. Over 100 entries moved from Avenue B to 12th Ave. as Hutchinson Police officers manned closed intersections and two motorcycle officers weaved around the entries along the route. Eagle Media, the parade’s sponsor and organizer, provided patriotic music and announced each entry as they moved north along Main St. in front of the company’s building and viewing area at 825 N Main St.
