SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — The search for a reported missing swimmer in South Kingstown has been suspended.

The U.S. Coast Guard Station Point Judith told 12 News they had assets out in the area of East Matunuck but no longer believe there is a swimmer out there.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) called the Coast Guard for assistance at 10:40 a.m. on Thursday morning. Law enforcement were also at the scene investigating.

The DEM says there are strong rip currents in the area and red flags are flying. It is unclear what prompted the search.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
