Teen Services at Seekonk Public Library
Tweens and Teens in rising grades 6 and up, there’s still time to join Seekonk Public Library’s Summer Reading Challenge in-person and online! Log into the free Beanstack app to sign up for the “Read, Renew, Repeat” challenge and collect virtual badges for logging your reading, writing reviews, and participating in activities. Each badge earns one or more raffle tickets that you can enter into weekly online drawings as well as a variety of grand prize drawings. You’ll also want to come visit the library in-person for our last two summer teen programs listed below, as well as to participate in a drop-in scavenger hunt and pick up a weekly pop-in charm for your bracelet (or shoes).

Man with Fall River ties enhancing historical accuracy and functionality of ships at Battleship Cove
Fall River, MA – A collaboration is leading to ships at Battleship Cove being restored to their historical glory. According to the Fall River Arts Project, Chandler Hearn, a recent graduate of IYRS’s Digital Modeling and Fabrication program in Newport, Rhode Island, has successfully installed custom-built belaying pins on the USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., a historic Gearing-class destroyer docked at Battleship Cove in Fall River, Massachusetts. This installation marks a significant achievement for Hearn, whose capstone project involved creating intricate parts for naval ships.

Restoration of stone walls at Miantonomi Park is completed
The City of Newport and Preserve Rhode Island (Preserve RI) announced today that the restoration of Miantonomi Park’s stone walls has been completed. The project began last September when a 250-foot stretch of wall was repaired. The second phase, begun in June, finalizes the north entry point to the park and repairs approximately 336 feet of wall along Girard Avenue. Preserve RI, acting as project lead for the Scenic Aquidneck Coalition, has been working with the City of Newport on the repairs.
Rhode Island man facing list of charges after shooting himself during altercation at bar
Colonel Michael J. Winquist, Chief of the Cranston Police Department, has announced that a local man is facing multiple charges after a shooting at a local bar. On Saturday, at just after 11:15 p.m., Cranston uniformed officers were working a security detail at 39 West, located at 39 Phenix Avenue in Cranston when they heard a gunshot. The officers then observed two men fighting. Officers immediately separated both men and observed a handgun in the hand of one of the subjects identified as 28-year-old Michael Mancini of Cranston. Officers took Mancini to the ground as he refused to release his grip on the gun and violently resisted arrest. Officers were eventually able to subdue Mancini and seized the loaded handgun that contained a fifteen-round magazine.

9:59 a.m. – A hatchling fell out of a nest more than 20 feet up on Long Street and was brought to the wildlife clinic. 10:32 a.m. – An apartment resident told police another resident made him uncomfortable by not letting him get into an elevator and “getting into his personal area.” The man did not want to press charges, but said that the other man had harassed various people in the building in the past.

North Smithfield Professional Firefighters Local 3984 congratulated Capt. Brian Gartland of B Platoon on his retirement this week. Gartland has served the town of North Smithfield for many decades, working his way through the ranks and retiring as a captain at Station 1.
