SOUTH PARK, Pa. (KDKA) -- One person was severely injured at a federal research center in South Park Township on Friday.

The incident happened just before 1 p.m. behind security gates at the federal facility off Cochran Mill Road. Allegheny County officials said the person had severe arm and facial injuries.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said an outside vendor was loading hazardous waste material into a truck for disposal and was injured. A 5-gallon, off-gassing presumably exploded while being loaded into a truck.

There are no concerns regarding the potential release of hazardous materials and there isn't a threat to the facility's staff, the CDC said.

The county confirmed a hazmat coordinator was on scene to help and the Broughton Fire Company is leading the investigation locally. No information has been released on the outside vendor who was injured.

According to the CDC's website, the Bruceton Research Center has two National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health divisions that work there. It's also home to an office of the Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration and the Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory.
