SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The 32nd Annual South Plainfield Alliance for Substance Awareness (SPASA) and South Plainfield Education Foundation (SPEF) Labor Day 5K Run and Family Fitness Walk will take place the morning of Monday, Sept. 2.
“The exciting news is the Labor Day festivities have returned to their morning start, so we are hoping for an even greater turnout than the past couple of years,” said Race Coordinator Shannon Colucci
Set to begin and end on Lake Street next to South Plainfield Middle School, the event is open to residents of all ages. Computer timing will be handled by Best Race Systems with race results posted online . Trophies will be awarded to 5K race finishers in the 14 & under and 15-19 age categories with awards and trophies also presented to the top male and female finishers in the 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 & over age groups.
Pre-registration, which runs until 11:59 p.m. Aug. 10, is $15 per person/ $5 per student with valid identification, and can be completed online through the RunSignup website . From Aug. 11 through race day, the entry fee will be $20 for the 5K; $5 per person/family for participants of the 1.5 mile fitness walk. Please note, day of sign in will begin at 8:15 a.m. with the event set to start at 9:30 a.m.
According to Colucci, the goal of the annual 5K race/walk is to ‘promote family togetherness and a positive drug-free, fun-filled fitness lifestyle’ while raising money for two local programs ‘dedicated to reducing substance abuse in the community by targeting the youth population.’ Each year, she said, over 300 members of the community take part in the fundraising event which enables SPASA to provide educational-based substance awareness programs for the South Plainfield community and SPEF to provide scholarships, educational programs, and academic incentives to the students of South Plainfield.
“The more participants in the 5K and Family Walk, the more attention we can bring to promoting a healthy, active lifestyle and substance abuse awareness, all the while building scholarships for the youth of our community,” Colucci said.
