( KRON ) — Recent vehicle burglaries in South San Francisco have prompted police to issue a safety alert. According to the South San Francisco Police Department, several strong-armed robberies and smash-and-grab vehicle burglaries have occurred at gas stations and shopping centers.

The burglaries, which police call a "crime of opportunity," are being committed in the Westborough neighborhood and surrounding cities, SSFPD said.

"During the incidents, the suspects broke into vehicles while they were occupied and/or while the victims were filling up their gas tanks," police said. "The suspects have stolen purses, luggage, and other valuable items and then fled the scene in carious get-away vehicles."

In response, South San Francisco police said it has increased patrols in the targeted areas. Police advise not contacting potential burglars in order to preserve safety, and suggest being "the best witness you can be."

SSFPD offered a list of things to remember to prevent becoming a target:

    • Always be aware of your surroundings
    • Park in a well-lit area
    • Roll up your vehicle's windows and lock all doors when stopped or parked
    • Hide personal belongings and store items in the trunk when possible
    • Do not leave purses, bags or luggage on vacant seats
    • Keep electronics out of sight
    • Use GPS tracking devices when possible
    • Report suspicious activity to the police
