Kaine campaigns in Emporia
Senator Tim Kaine’s visit to Emporia on Monday afternoon ended up a discussion less about his own campaign and instead on the county’s commander in chief. Kaine is running for his third term in the United States Senate, a position he has held since 2012. Prior to his career in politics, Kaine was a civil rights lawyer specializing in fair housing law and fought many cases — including one in Emporia — for people discriminated against on the basis of race or disability. He was elected to the Richmond City Council in 1994 and later served as mayor of Richmond, lieutenant governor and governor of Virginia before being elected to the U.S. Senate.
