Senator Tim Kaine’s visit to Emporia on Monday afternoon ended up a discussion less about his own campaign and instead on the county’s commander in chief. Kaine is running for his third term in the United States Senate, a position he has held since 2012. Prior to his career in politics, Kaine was a civil rights lawyer specializing in fair housing law and fought many cases — including one in Emporia — for people discriminated against on the basis of race or disability. He was elected to the Richmond City Council in 1994 and later served as mayor of Richmond, lieutenant governor and governor of Virginia before being elected to the U.S. Senate.

RR man charged with computer solicitation of minor
A 29-year-old Roanoke Rapids man Wednesday was charged with a count of solicitation of a minor by computer following an investigation that began in April. Major Anzell M. Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said the criminal investigations division received a report on April 15 about a man, later identified as Taylor Scott Harris, contacting a female juvenile for sexual favors.
