SOUTHBRIDGE — A Connecticut man was arrested after a Thursday afternoon vehicle pursuit that crossed state lines, led to a Charlton cruiser being struck and ended in Southbridge, according to Charlton police.
Nicholas Newton, 31, of Connecticut was arrested in Southbridge after several unsuccessful attempts to stop a vehicle in the southwestern Worcester County and eastern Hampden County areas. According to a news release from the Charlton Police Department, the chase stemmed from an incident in Connecticut.
The chase involved both high and low speeds.
Charlton police gave the following account:
The operator of the vehicle, a blue sedan with significant damage, is alleged to have intentionally struck a police cruiser and another vehicle in Connecticut.
At about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, the state police notified the Charlton police that the vehicle was traveling west on Route 20. It was also reported that the vehicle had been stolen in Connecticut and that the operator possibly possessed a firearm.
Charlton police observed a vehicle matching the description in traveling east on Route 20.
The driver is alleged to have crossed the solid lines on Route 20 (Sturbridge Road) upon seeing police.
The driver is alleged to have traveled along Route 20 corridor and intersecting streets with the Charlton police in pursuit. The vehicle also reportedly struck a Charlton police cruiser and continued to flee.
The vehicle came to a stop on Torrey Road in Southbridge, and Newton was reportedly taken into custody by Charlton police.
A subsequent investigation confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen, the Charlton police said. Newton was reportedly in possession of stolen property and narcotics. He also has outstanding arrest warrants in both Connecticut and Florida.
Newton was transported to a hospital and will be arraigned in Dudley District Court. He faces multiple motor vehicle, property and narcotics charges. The vehicle was subsequently towed away in Southbridge.
The matter remains under investigation.
