A brand new clubhouse, a newly paved parking lot and ideal playing conditions greeted golfers from a trio of Southern Maryland Athletic Conference teams as they arrived at Chesapeake Hills Golf Course on Tuesday afternoon, but it was the squad from Huntingtown High School that appeared to thrive most.

Huntingtown (6-1) golfers collected a pair of wins on Sept. 3 with a team score of 175 as they defeated North Point (211) and Calvert (213) on Tuesday, with the Eagles earning the split at the match by edging the Cavaliers by two strokes.

Huntingtown not only had the collective low team score, but Hurricanes’ junior Tanner Currie (38) was the low medalist, six strokes better than junior teammate Tanner Chapman (44).

“I think they’ve played really well through the first two matches,” said Huntingtown first-year coach Courtney Parker, whose team will next play at Cedar Point on Sept. 11. “Tanner opened the round with a double bogey but then parred the remaining eight holes to finish at two-over par. That’s excellent composure to start a round with a double and then still finish two over.”

Huntingtown’s two Tanners — Currie and Chapman — led the way for the Hurricanes on Tuesday, while Nolan Roschel shot a 46 and Hannah Heavener finished with a 47.

North Point got solid rounds from Austin Harding (45) and Mia Johnson (49), with Lena Black (55) and Julian Weedin (62) scoring. Calvert was led by Ben Caruoto (49), Kolton Leitch (54) and both Wyatt Bradley (55) and Alex Lembo (55).

Parker, who is also a math teacher at Huntingtown, praised the course managers at Chesapeake Hills for their diligence throughout the summer drought. The new clubhouse also offers a refreshing, modern change from the previous set-up.

“The course is in great shape,” Parker said. “I think it’s now the premiere golf course in the county. The tees, the fairways and the greens are in tremendous shape. Now they have a really nice clubhouse where people can enjoy the view of the course and relax. They’ve also started hosting weddings there.”

Chesapeake Hills will also host the Calvert County Golf Championships on Oct. 9 as well as the SMAC Golf Championships on Oct. 15.

Breton Bay Golf Course in St. Mary’s County will host the District Tournament on Oct. 21 then the University of Maryland in College Park will host the three-day state tournament Oct. 28-30.
