Lawmakers work toward solution on juvenile justice
Lawmakers are moving toward consensus on changes to Maryland’s juvenile justice system, discussing how to address crime by children ages 10 to 12 and get them into rehabilitation programs that can help. The House and Senate have each passed their own version in this effort, and lawmakers are now turning to the task of agreeing on a shared solution. The main point of contention between the two bills now is...
Maryland lawmakers urge Congress to spend more on Chesapeake Bay restoration
Citing encouraging signs of improvement, five Maryland lawmakers expressed their support earlier this month for increased funding of the federally-backed Chesapeake Bay restoration program. “We’ve made progress,” Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) said at a March 6 luncheon hosted by the Choose Clean Water Coalition. “We have the least amount of dead zones that we’ve seen since the 1980s on the bay. We have underwater grasses that are coming back in the Chesapeake Bay. We have oyster crops that we never thought we’d be able to...

While the North Point High girls basketball and St. Charles High boys basketball teams advanced to their respective state semifinals, both the Huntingtown girls and Thomas Stone boys saw their seasons come to an end last weekend in the state quarterfinals. Huntingtown (15-10), which had earned the program’s first regional title last Wednesday with a 56-47 victory over fellow Southern Maryland Athletic Conference rival McDonough, proved no match for Wicomico High School on Saturday afternoon as the Hurricanes were upended by the host Indians 58-29....
Opioid deaths spur push for kids to carry naloxone
Jackson Taylor remembers when a peer passed out from an overdose across from his high school. He knows friends who have struggled with addiction. One has been in and out of rehab. Those experiences help explain why the Rockville High School senior now trains his peers on how to administer naloxone, a lifesaving medication that reverses opioid overdoses. They’re why he carries naloxone at school and why he wants all districts to let their students do the same. ...

First-year College of Southern Maryland student Denzel Chance traveled to Annapolis Feb. 20 to testify before the Maryland House of Delegates Appropriations Committee in support of House Bill 0607 — a bill that if passed would make it easier for students pursuing noncredit workforce certificates, licensures or apprenticeship programs to receive the Maryland Community College Promise Scholarship. It was the second time in two weeks that Chance, who is a Promise Scholarship recipient himself, visited Annapolis to meet with his representatives, share his CSM story...
Huntingtown girls basketball wins first region title
When the Huntingtown High School girls basketball team welcomed visiting McDonough on Wednesday evening for the 2A South Region final, the host Hurricanes were hoping to join several of the school’s other programs by finally hanging a region championship banner on the gymnasium wall. Following a frenetic first half in which there were nine lead...

Charles commissioners argue over proposed removal bill
A bill outlining a removal process for a sitting commissioner in Charles County was struck down in a 3-2 vote on March 5, causing frustrations to rise. County Attorney Wes Adams said that some commissioners have expressed a desire for depoliticizing a removal...
