Calvert indoor swimming pool to close for over 40 days
The summer of 2024 will be a time for Calvert County swimmers to get their pool fix outdoors. The Edward T. Hall Aquatic Center, which routinely closes every mid-August for maintenance, will have a 44-day period this summer when it is closed to the public. The Calvert County Department of Parks and Recreation announced last week that the Hall center will be closed for an extended annual maintenance period due to the nature of work being conducted. ...
St. Mary's planning board examines Stewart's Grant roads
The old saying is that two are better than one, but in the case of the proposed Stewart’s Grant development, it appears two are also better than more, at least where lanes are concerned. The St. Mary’s County Panning Commission met Monday night to discuss the entrance into the Great Mills development, which will be at George Washington Carver Boulevard and Bayside Road. It was suggested that a 0.7-mile section...
Calvert girls lacrosse makes quick work of Great Mills
One day after their contest had been postponed by a series of severe thunderstorms that swept through St. Mary’s County and wreaked havoc on the athletic schedules, the Calvert High School girls lacrosse team scored early and often en route to an 18-2 victory over host Great Mills on Tuesday. Calvert (5-1) was on the offensive from the opening whistle on Tuesday and the Cavaliers scored the game’s first six goals before the Hornets finally responded with one from Abril Esparza shortly before the first...
St. Mary's school board candidates square off
Candidates hoping to earn (or retain) a place on the St. Mary’s County Board of Education panel were able to voice their opinions and concerns during an election forum on April 11 at the Lexington Park library. The forum featured candidates vying for at-Large and District 2 seats. Because two of the three candidates in District 4 — Mary Washington (illness, death in the family) and David Drys (trip abroad) — were absent and only Charles L.V. Carrington was in attendance, a decision to postpone...

Costley, a deaf and hard-of-hearing itinerant instructor with Charles County Public Schools, will be heading to the Philippines in July to teach middle and high school students STEM topics through games. Costley will be helping schools overseas to find ways to bring games into...
Documenting 'Grandma's Hands' in the kitchen

They cooked recipes that have passed through generations and shared the history of their food, families and heritage. The documentary film premiered...

Calvert softball upends La Plata
Three weeks after being humbled in their season opener at home, the Calvert High School softball team earned a measure of atonement last week when the Cavaliers beat host La Plata 5-1 in the Warriors’ first “Autism Awareness” game. Calvert (3-3) has appeared in each of the last three Maryland 2A state title games under coach Lauren Robison, but La Plata was unimpressed with the Cavaliers’ gaudy resume when the two teams met on March 21 in Prince Frederick and the visiting Warriors departed with...
