UNC Asheville graduate Patten makes history, winning Wimbledon men's doubles title
LONDON (AP) — UNC Asheville men's tennis now has its first-ever Wimbledon title. On July 13 in the men's doubles championship, the unseeded team of Henry Patten, a 2019 UNC Asheville graduate, and Harri Heliovaara saved three match points in the second set, rallying to defeat the Australian team of Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson 6-7 (7), 7-6 (8), 7-6 (11-9) for their first Grand Slam title. Patten and Heliovaara are the first unseeded duo to win the men's doubles title since 2014.

He’s rising second-grader Lucas Bradshaw, and at just 7 years old, he’s already making quite the name for himself on the motocross circuit, according to proud parents Joseph and Tiffany Bradshaw of Maiden. As Mrs. Bradshaw told The Herald this week, her son is soon headed off to the National Motocross Championship, July 29-Aug. 3. Young Bradshaw is among the country’s top 40 riders in his class.
Man killed in Smyth County motorcycle crash
SMYTH COUNTY, Va. (WCYB) — A man was killed in a motorcycle crash that happened on Sunday afternoon in Smyth County, according to Virginia State Police. Police said the crash happened on Interstate 81 southbound at mile marker 48. Authorities said the driver, 36-year-old Carl Coe, of Hillsville, Virginia, went off the left side of the interstate. The motorcycle then struck a guardrail.

Republican Rep. Jason Saine, a top budget writer and influential lawmaker, will resign from the North Carolina House on Monday, he told WRAL.
