    Sparta Police Participate in 2 Road Safety Awareness Initiatives

    SPARTA, NJ – Sparta Police Department has been participating it two initiatives to increase driver safety, using grant funding to increase patrolling on Sparta’s roads.

    “The expectation for these grants is to continue making motorists aware of operating their vehicle safely and making the roadways a safer place for everyone,” Sparta Police Chief Jeff McCarrick said.

    Click It or Ticket grant of $7,000 supported 77 man-hours from May 20 through June 2.  During that time there were 116 motor vehicle stops:

    • Seatbelts – 31
    • Speeding – 1
    • Suspended license – 1
    • Careless driving -6
    • Other – 55
    • Arrests – 1 out of town warrant
    • Total of 97 summonses

    The second initiative Move Over is a $7000 federal grant to support overtime patrols from July 1 through September 30.  The intention of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety  Move Over initiative is to “increase awareness and enforce the law requiring drivers to move over a lane or slow down and be prepared to stop for emergency vehicles, tow trucks and disabled vehicles,” according to McCarrick.

    McCarrick said an update on the results of the Move Over grant will be announced once it has been completed.
