In this edition of “Then and Now,” we look at Upper Montclair’s northeast corner of Valley Road and Bellevue Avenue. At the turn of the 19th century, pharmacies such as J.H. Laubenheimer at the northeast corner of Valley Road and Bellevue Avenue were ubiquitous, and there were often multiple pharmacies within a single block. This location operated as a drugstore at least into the 1950s, and many residents may remember it as Valvano’s or Val’s. The pharmacies often featured soda fountains; note the wooden counters running along the outside of the pharmacy.

Maher steps up to help 5-year-old Chester girl battling cancer
CHESTER – Assemblyman Brian Maher (R, Walden) describes 5-year-old Lilly Fernandez as a fun and spunky girl who has a love for music, singing, and dancing. Fernandez’s story resonates with Maher so much because the little girl reminds him of his daughter. Young Lilly was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in March and Maher has organized a team to support the Fernandez family, which includes fundraising.
