School board OKs 3.71% tax increase
After voters rejected a ballot question seeking approval to raise $1.7 million as a permanent addition to the Byram Township School District budget in April, the Board of Education voted earlier this month to increase the budget by $471, 528. That will raise the local tax levy by 3.71 percent.

Woman Injured in Shooting on Prospect and Market Streets in Paterson
PATERSON, NJ - A 43-year-old Paterson woman sustained non-fatal gunshot wounds on Sunday, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer in Charge Isa Abbassi announced. According to a statement, at approximately 9:57 p.m. on July 21, members of the Paterson Police Department were dispatched to the area of Prospect Street and Market Street in response to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located the victim who had sustained non-fatal gunshot wounds. Roseland to Impose an 'Outright' Ban on All Short-Term Rentals
ROSELAND, NJ -- Mayor James Spango said that a five-year old ordinance regulating short-term rentals in the borough will now be tightened to impose a full ban on these types of rentals in town. In 2019, the Roseland Borough Council passed an ordinance requiring a license in order to offer a short-term rental for a non-refundable fee of $500. That ordinance also required a fee of $60 in order to offer a dwelling for short-term rental a Certificate of Habitability from the Housing and Property Maintenance Department that would be good for 30 days. Fire breaks out in Chester commercial building
On the morning on July 21, a fire broke out in a commercial building in the area of 39 Elkay Drive in Chester. According to the Sugar Loaf Engine Company, upon their arrival at the scene, the team found a working fire inside the building, soon upgrading the blaze to a second alarm fire. The crew was able to knock down the fire inside while mutual aid teams assisted with ventilation and suppressing “spot fires,” the fire company shared on Facebook.
Truck explosion destroys residential sound wall along NJ Route 3
CLIFTON — A truck explosion obliterated a sound barrier along Route 3 and melted the siding of a house Monday morning. Route 3 was closed in both directions where the highway meets Route 46 and passes over Valley Road in Clifton after the tractor-trailer went up in flames around 9 a.m. The highway remained closed as of 11:45 a.m.
