GLEN ROCK, NJ - In conjunction with New Jersey Transit Free Fares week, the borough has waived parking fees in Borough lots through Monday, September 2nd. Passaic, NJ – On August 17th-18th, 2024, the City of Passaic held its free Annual Family Campout at Third Ward Memorial Park, welcoming a dozen families for a weekend of outdoor activities and community bonding. Led by Mayor Hector C. Lora and the Department of Recreation, the event allowed families to connect and enjoy nature, despite inclement weather during the evening. Even with the rainy conditions, all attendants were able to experience a true night of camping under the stars, complete with the adventure of weathering the elements. Saturday’s activities included a city-sponsored dinner, traditional campfire s’mores, stargazing, and a special outdoor screening of Ghostbusters. “The Family Campout is an event we look forward to every year. It offers a unique opportunity for families to disconnect from their daily routines, immerse themselves in nature, and build lasting connections with each other and their community,” said Mayor Lora. “We are proud to continue fostering these experiences for our residents.” Sunday morning began with a city-sponsored breakfast, followed by fishing at Third Ward Park’s own lake to bring the weekend to a satisfying close. Throughout the event, participants enjoyed a wide range of activities, including sports, games, arts and crafts, and water balloon fights, building community among attendees. A playful figurative bear sighting further heightened the day’s humor. State Monitor Overrides Nutley Board of Education Vote
NUTLEY, NJ - The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) monitor Jeanette Makus overrode a vote made by the Nutley Board of Education in what she described as being in the best interest of the students. The issue in question was a payment of $27,957.71 for unused vacation time for an employee of the district. The other members of the BOE voted no. Item J reads: J. APPROVAL OF UNUSED VACATION DAYS BE IT RESOLVED that the Nutley Board of Education approves the payment of unused vacation days to Employee ID # 4205 in the amount of $27,957.71, as per contract. After the vote, Makus spoke and explained that she would override the BOE vote, citing the legal expenses associated with denying the payment. As state monitor, Makus has the ability to override all decisions in the best interest of the students, district, and ultimately the taxpayers.
