Hornell softball scores thrilling walk-off win, baseball falls as HHS splits with Livonia

A night after tying the game in the bottom of the seventh inning before ultimately falling to Elmira, Hornell sealed the deal and scored a dramatic 5-4 walk-off win over Livonia on Wednesday.

The scoreboard was knotted at four apiece in the bottom of the seventh inning when Jordyn Dyring's clutch triple drove in the game-winning run for the Red Raiders.

Livonia got on the board first with an unearned run in the top of the second inning. Hornell evened the score in the bottom of the inning on a passed ball. The Red Raiders later took their first lead of the night in the sixth inning when Kadience Gollnitz hit an RBI ground out, followed by Reese Harwood's two-run double that made it 4-1 in favor of the hosts.

Livonia answered with three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game, setting the stage for Hornell's walk-off win off the bat of Dyring.

Lexi Smith earned the win for Hornell, giving up four hits and four runs (three earned) over seven innings of work. Smith struck out five and walked three.

Harwood, the No. 8 hitter in the Hornell lineup, finished the night with two RBI and two of Hornell's five walks on the night. Dyring, Harwood, Parker Graham, and Smith each had one hit for Hornell. Graham also had two of Hornell's four stolen bases.

Bulldogs edge Hornell on baseball diamond, 12-8

Over on the baseball diamond, meanwhile, Hornell dropped a high-scoring contest to visiting Livonia, 12-8 on Wednesday.

Livonia quickly struck first in the top of the first inning after Brady O'Keete hit a sac fly, Zach Williamson singled, and Jack Tebeau walked, each scoring a run.

Williamson and Tommy Stewart added RBI singles in the third inning. Livonia did most of its damage in the seventh inning with five runs off four hits. Seth Eadie struck the biggest blow with a two-run single.

Posting a hit apiece for Hornell were Gennaro Picco, Wyatt Evingham, Andrew Davis, Brayden Vaughn, Dan Barnett, Davin Oyer and Lucas Hancock. Picco and Barnett both had two RBI to pace the Hornell offense, which had plenty of baserunners and worked eight walks. Picco and Vaughn both had two walks, while Picco stole three bases.

Charlie Oyer tossed five innings on the mound for Hornell, giving up seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits. Oyer struck out five and walked three. The Hornell defense turned a double play to help escape a jam.
