Former Olean school chief appointed interim superintendent in Wellsville. Meet Colleen Taggerty

A former Olean City School chief has been named interim superintendent at Allegany County's largest public school district.

The Wellsville Central School Board of Education Tuesday appointed Dr. Colleen Taggerty interim superintendent following the resignation of Dave Foster earlier this summer . Taggerty will begin the job Aug. 26, the district said.

Taggerty was Olean City School District superintendent for nine years, from 2008 to 2017. Most recently, she was president of Archbishop Walsh and Southern Tier Catholic Schools in Olean. She was appointed to that post in 2022.

Taggerty also served a previous stint as interim superintendent of the Fredonia Central School District.

Wellsville officials said Taggerty has extensive experience with local BOCES systems and has been an adjunct faculty member at several area colleges and universities.

"I am excited for this opportunity to work with Wellsville students, family and staff during this time of transition," Taggerty said in a statement released by the district.

Foster, who has been superintendent in Wellsville since 2017, announced on June 28 that he had accepted the position of school superintendent at in the Cattaraugus-Little Valley Central School District .

Foster's lengthy tenure in Wellsville included serving as the district's director Finance and Operations for about ten years, as well as high school assistant principal and middle school and high school science teacher.

He will officially step down in Wellsville in late August.

The district did not immediately release a timeline for appointing a permanent superintendent to replace Foster.
