Not even a historic summer storm can slow down the longest continuously running county fair in the U.S.

The 205th Steuben County Fair was a dry beacon in a flooded county as it hosted harness racing Monday at the fairgrounds in Bath.

It was a quiet start to a fair week that revved up Tuesday with the official opening and then swings into high gear on Wednesday with the popular Coleman Bros. Carnival debuting at 1 p.m.

Elsewhere in the county, especially in places like Canisteo, Jasper, Greenwood and Woodhull, recovery crews continue to assess damages and clear roads, properties and homes after Tropical Storm Debby flooded the region Aug. 9.

There have been no reports of flooding or any flood-related problems at the East Washington Street fairgrounds.

And while more than a dozen roads in Steuben County remain closed, no problems have popped up around Bath.

"Fortunately, the fair has not been impacted, nor any roads in the Bath area," said Steuben County Sheriff James Allard.

Added Steuben County Manager Jack Wheeler, "We certainly urge caution for folks traveling. The road closures remain valid and we plan to send an updated list later as crews continue to work."

A fair official said the storm impacted two or three exhibitors from Greenwood who won't be showing due to the storm, but that's about all.

Admission cost for the 2024 Steuben County Fair

Because there is a limited schedule of events on the first two days of the fair, Aug. 12-13, there was no cost to enter. Daily admission is now $5 Wednesday through Sunday. Five-day passes are available for $20. Children five and under are admitted free of charge.
