Spokane native Steve Gleason will be honored on the national stage next month as he's presented with an ESPY award for his courage in the fight against ALS.

ESPN announced Thursday Gleason will be given the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage.

Gleason, a Spokane native and graduate of Gonzaga Prep and Washington State University, has been public with his battle with ALS and his commitment to advance technology that helps those also diagnosed with the disease.

Past recipients of the award include the USA Gymnastics survivors of sexual abuse, Bill Russell, and the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team.

On Facebook Thursday, Gleason wrote "Being recognized at the 2024 ESPYS is not just an honor, but a powerful platform to further help and serve others. Thank you, ESPN, for this incredible accolade."

The ESPYS will air Thursday, July 11th at 8 pm on ABC.

Gleason also just released a book about his life and living with ALS called ' A Life Impossible'.
