Mayor Brown implements two initiatives to improve Spokane street safety

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown signed two initiatives Wednesday with the goal of improving street safety in the city.

First Mayor Brown signed an executive order to implement the Safe Streets infrastructure. This directive comes from the Spokane City Council passed the "Janet Mann - Safe Streets Now" resolution named after a woman killed while walking in downtown.

The executive order establishes multiple traffic safety initiatives including improved traffic calming, adaptive design projects, and focus on pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure.

The second act Mayor Brown took today was an ordinance to establish a new transportation commission. The commission will review and analyze policies and projects to help the city eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

“Everyone has the right to get to work, school and their homes safely. We have the ability to proactively address safety risks that are built into the transportation system, and it is long past time that we start implementing these proven strategies. By adapting our design processes, we can ensure that everyone makes it to where they are going,” Mayor Brown said.
