The Salvation Army makes sure every kid can experience summer camp with scholarships

LOON LAKE, Wash. - Less than an hour from Spokane, Camp Gifford invites kids to swap screens for rock walls and lasting friendships.

At Camp Gifford, children ages seven to seventeen embrace a week of outdoor adventures.

For many, it's a rare chance to try activities like rock climbing and archery.

"I've made over ten friends in just two weeks," said Micah, a 9-year-old camper. The serene Deer Lake serves as the perfect setting, hosted by The Salvation Army of Spokane.

According to Captain David Cain, county coordinator and corp officer of The Salvation Army of Spokane, financial barriers don't deter families from joining the adventure. The organization offers scholarships for the majority of campers. The cost to apply is $60 and for most families, that's all they will end up paying.

From now until August 2nd, Camp Gifford remains a hive of energy and outdoor exploration. For many participants, leaving at the end of the five-day session is the hardest part.

"It's like, 'Why do we have to leave?' I don't want to leave," said Micah.
