Spokane heatwave prompts surge in air conditioner demand

SPOKANE, Wash. —  Local air conditioning companies are getting more calls than usual because of the heat.

Amanda French is the owner of AF Honest Home Services in Spokane. She said her business is getting more calls everyday, specifically for air conditioners. Most people who are calling are either looking to get a new air conditioner installed, or an old one fixed.

Sometimes a repair to an old unit can be cheap, but most of the time, French said she recommends getting a new AC unit as a replacement.

If you're concerned about filtering smoke out of your home this summer, especially if you don't have air conditioning, there are still ways you can prepare and filter your air.

Organizations like 350 Spokane show people how to build a DIY filter using a box fan.

"It's just a square air filter that you might put in your AC or your furnace. So you put one of those and then you just wrap a bungee cord to attach it and that holds it in place," said Trenton Miller with 350 Spokane.

Overall, French said the longer the heatwave lasts, the more demand there will be for air conditioners and alternative ways to stay cool. She added it's important to reach out to professionals if you need a repair as soon as possible because you could experience delays with the demand.
