A cougar hopped a backyard fence at a family's home on Spokane's South Hill

SPOKANE, Wash. -- A South Hill family had an unexpected visitor in their backyard on Wednesday morning.

Around 4:30 a.m. on July 17, Dalton Reilly's ring camera caught a cougar jumping over his backyard fence.

"We were all asleep when he rolled through here," said Reilly. "We usually let our dogs out at 5:30, so it was really close."

In the video, the cougar circles the backyard before hopping back over the other side of the fence.

The backyard faces South Grand Boulevard, a busy road near a popular park. With people trying to escape the heat and maybe get outside early, it's lucky no one else had a run-in with the cat.

Thankfully, no one was harmed and all that is left of the cat is a few muddy pawprints.

"With this going on, you have to make sure you keep your small animals attended to, until animal control comes in here and takes care of it. People just need to be a little extra safe right now," said Reilly.
