Staying safe during extreme heat around the Inland Northwest

SPOKANE, Wash. - Staying cool during this incredibly hot time is crucial for your health.

It's also important to make sure your loved ones are doing the same.

If you have to be outside, checking out one of Spokane's pools or splash pads is a good call.

"We depend on [splash pads]. The kids get to socialize, get their wiggles out." said Haley Abrahamson, a Spokane mom.

The Spokane Fire Department said it tends to get more calls from elderly people during these extended heat waves. Firefighter Jason Beck said it's important to be getting in enough water, and making sure family and friends are doing the same.

"Elderly and children have a harder time staying hydrated in this heat... and we just want to make sure they are staying healthy," said Beck.

SFD also encouraged people to be careful when taking their pets on walks and making sure the ground isn't too hot.

Leaving people or pets in a car during extreme heat is always a "no" - even if it's only for a few minutes.
